That Serena Williams did a little ghetto-dance after winning the gold medal for tennis in London should not surprise any American. Dancing is how a great many black people celebrate victory in sporting events. Why should that too-white place called Wimbledon be exempt from this cultural enrichment?
However, this was Wimbledon folks. It is one of the crown jewels of Western Civilization and it is simply depressing to have the world see this and
think know that this represents the America of 2012. It is bad enough that this representative of the new America is dancing on the court at Wimbledon after a win, but compounding the inappropriateness is the dance she has chosen: the Crip Dance, named for the Compton, California gang known as The Crips.
Ain’t that America!
Here is a fitting, symbolic end to the debacle.
It is also symbolic of America in general. With every day that passes, something new happens to draw attention to how dramatically America has become unlike what she has been throughout most of her history. What will future athletes of the new America do to celebrate? One can only sit and wonder.
John McEnroe was a rude player (and is now a rude broadcast announcer). To watch him play was embarrassing for Americans who did not wish to be seen as bratty, foul mouthed-white trash. Serena Williams has arguably surpassed Mr. McEnroe in the art of embarrassing ones countrymen with this display.
