Swedish citizen Mehdi Ghezali, the suicide bomber who boarded an Israeli tourist bus Wednesday in Burgas, Bulgaria and triggered an explosive device murdering six people, was a prisoner at the U.S. detainment camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from 2002 – 2004. The Prime Minister of Sweden, Goran Persson lobbied the U.S. for Ghezali’s release and in 2004 Ghezali was handed over to Sweden for continued detainment. However, Swedish authorities never pressed charges.
Ghezali, who was of Algerian and Finnish descent, also starred in a 2005 Swedish-made documentary about his detention at Guantanamo bay.
